Grab your family or other responder friends for a nice drive to the mountains. Kick off the day by meeting at the Starbucks in downtown Breckenridge before heading out for an off-road adventure to the summit of Peak 10. No chair lift is required to get to the peak, but a 4X4 vehicle is. This scenic trail climbs above 13,000 feet through alpine forests, historic mining areas, and a series of iconic switchbacks that reward drivers with breathtaking panoramic views of the Tenmile Range and the surrounding Rocky Mountains. After reaching the summit and soaking in the views, we'll descend back into Breckenridge and wrap up the adventure with food at The Canteen Tap House & Tavern (208 N Main St, Breckenridge, CO 80424).

You must provide your own vehicle that has 4-wheel drive capabilities, good tires, low gears are preferred for the return off the mountain to save your brakes but not required. Bring your family (dogs included if well behaved and get along with other dogs) for one last summer day before school starts back up. The first half (Easy): The beginning of the trail passes directly through the Breckenridge Ski Resort property. It features well-maintained dirt roads that wind under ski lifts and past the Overlook Lodge. Passenger cars and stock trucks can easily manage this segment, making it highly accessible for taking in early views of the Blue River valley. Second Half (Challenging): Once you pass the ski property gates, the trail becomes much more serious. The route narrows into a steep shelf road covered in loose rocks and features tight, intimidating switchbacks. Good tires and a capable 4x4 setup are heavily recommended as you push above the timberline to the Briar Rose Mine ruins and telecommunications tower. This trail can be completed by stock 4 runners, stock jeep wranglers or a similar vehicle. Short wheel base vehicles are preferred due to the tight switchbacks on shelf roads.
